Ceramic lightweight structures for high temperature applicationsLightweight structures from oxide and non-oxide fibre reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC) show significant advantages compared to other materials. They are thermally stable up to 2700°C, have a low coefficient thermal expansion and a low heat conductivity as well as a high resistance to abrasion. Therefore CMC can be applied in brake disks, turbine wheels, gear wheels, heat exchanger and jet engines. Potential application:Oxide/oxide as well as C/C-SiC CMCs are especially interesting for components for the thermal protection of combustion chambers and hot gas liners in jet engines and stationary gas turbines. There rapid changes in temperature result in thermomechanical stresses. The C/C-SiC CMC can be used for any purpose where thermal shock ability and high resistance to abrasion is needed like turbine wheels, lightweight gear wheels, heat exchangers, structures with a low thermal expansion and lightweight brake discs for industrial brakes, automotive vehicles and trains. Competition advantages:
CMC materials are not as brittle as bulk ceramic, therefore can be used for safety relevant applications in general. The combination of the fibre and the ceramic result in an quasi-ductile behaviour under tension. |
